Hi all.

I have discovered a little problem with my power steering this weekend. The rack seems to bind and not want to return to center after a turn. I have put the car on a rack and removed the tie rod ends to make sure that it wasn't my struts. with the car hanging, it is almost impossible to turn the knuckle. I have seen alot in my time as a mechanic, but this is a first for me.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a better rack, maybe off of a newer SHO that would fit, even if some modification is needed. I do have VAPS.

Thanks in advance,

Justin

Curious, did you disconnect the tie rod end from either side and see if the knuckle still wouldn't turn? If that's the case I'd look into replacing the LCA (as the lower ball joint isn't replaceable) and the strut bearings.

The ZF rack from the gen3 SHOs is a good upgrade, really the only upgrade.

You can go for a Gen3 rack but you need custom lines and it is an expensive rack. It goes well with a Gen3 subframe swap.

We do have a better rebuilt rack: SHO Source

Putting in a rebuilt rack, and updating all the bushings and what not will really help the steering feel. I recently changed out from 15+ year old subframe bushings, to gen 3 rears, and the steering is now ultra sensitive.

I did leave everything connected while trying to move the knuckle. Everything moves fine with the tie rods disconnected. All of the front end parts are new, but not the rack. I may try new SFB's, but they look really good (I have had them down already).

I will price out a gen3 rack at work today, see if NAPA can give me a deal..

Thanks!

Gen3 SHO rack, not a regular gen3 rack...

After doing some searching, I'd have over 400 in parts to upgrade. I think that I'm going to have my rack rebuilt rather than upgrading right now. If I decide to upgrade the subframe later, I'll go with the better rack.

Thanks for the insight!!
